Job Training for Adults with Disabilities:Building Workplace Skills

At Our House, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to feel the pride and purpose that comes from meaningful work. That’s why job training for adults with disabilities is such an important part of what we do. Through personalized support, real-world experiences, and strong community partnerships, the people we serve are able to develop valuable workplace skills that support long-term success and independence.

Our House Employment Services is one of the oldest programs of its kind in New Jersey. Today, we’re proud to support over 70 talented individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through long-term follow-along, transition, and job sampling services, in partnership with 50 local businesses.

Why Job Training Matters for Adults with Disabilities

Having a job is about more than just earning a paycheck. For adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, employment builds confidence, encourages independence, and creates deeper connections with the community. It gives people a sense of purpose and belonging, and opens doors to friendships, growth and new experiences.

Unfortunately, employment opportunities for adults with disabilities are often limited due to misconceptions, lack of access, or simply not having the right support in place. That’s where we come in.

Our job training programs help bridge the gap by preparing individuals for success in the workplace. We teach practical skills, build confidence, and provide one-on-one coaching every step of the way.

How We Approach Job Training

No two people are alike, so we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we focus on each person’s strengths, interests, and goals to create a plan that’s as unique as they are. We provide the structure, guidance, and encouragement needed to help each individual move forward on their employment journey.

Person-Centered Planning

Our job training services start with getting to know each person one-on-one. We explore what they enjoy, what they’re good at and where they want to go. Through job sampling, individuals can try out different careers with our trusted employment partners. With this information, we create an individualized plan that focuses on building the specific skills they need to reach their goals.

Training takes place in real-life settings and includes a wide range of career paths—from retail and food service to custodial work, office tasks, and more.

Supported Employment Opportunities

Through our employment program, we connect individuals with opportunities that match their interests and abilities. Many of these positions are made possible through our partnerships with local businesses that share our commitment to inclusion.

Once someone is placed in a job, our support doesn’t stop there. Job coaches are available to provide on-the-job assistance, helping individuals learn tasks, adjust to the work environment, and communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors. We also remain in close contact with employers to make sure the placement is a good fit for everyone involved.

Workplace Skills Development

In addition to hands-on training, we offer structured learning experiences to help individuals prepare for the workforce. This includes:

  • Resume writing and interview preparation

  • Time management and daily routines

  • Professional behavior and communication

  • Workplace safety and task training

We also provide simulated work environments that help individuals practice in a safe, supportive setting before transitioning into community-based jobs.

Building Inclusive Workplaces with Our Community

We believe that inclusive employment benefits everyone. When individuals with disabilities are given the chance to work, they bring dedication, reliability and heart to their roles. At the same time, businesses gain hardworking team members who are proud to be part of something bigger.

We partner with local employers to create opportunities that support mutual success. Whether it’s offering a trial work experience, a permanent position or volunteering time to support training, our business partners are helping create a more inclusive and compassionate workforce.

If you’re a business owner interested in partnering with us, we’d love to talk with you. Together, we can create real opportunities that make a real difference.

The Impact of Job Training on Our Communities

When people with disabilities are empowered to work, the entire community becomes stronger. Job training helps reduce stigma, encourages understanding, and shows what’s possible when we support each other.

The economic and social impact is meaningful. Individuals gain independence, families gain peace of mind, and workplaces become more diverse and welcoming. We see it every day, small steps lead to big change.
